Welcome to JABSOM eNews!
Aloha. The John A. Burns School of Medicine is among the most diverse medical schools in the country, a fact recently noted by Dr. Darrell Kirch, President of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). In remarks at the AAMC’s annual meeting, Kirch said, “…diversity as a key to improving health for all continues to be led by institutions with rich traditions of diversity, our historically black medical schools, Howard, Meharry, and Morehouse, and schools such as the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine.”
We are delighted that the AAMC’s Chief Diversity Officer, Marc Nivet, will deliver the keynote address at our MD Convocation Ceremony for the Class of 2012 a little over three months from now. This issue of our JABSOM E-News includes that story, and other items making news at JABSOM.
I also want to take a moment to thank House and Senate members of the Hawai'i State Legislature who voted this month to reinstate JABSOM’s authority to use some of the tobacco master settlement agreement funds its receives for operations, and wish them—and you—a prosperous "Year of the Dragon".
Mahalo nui loa,
Jerris Hedges, MD, MS, MMM
Dean, John A. Burns School of Medicine
